# Constitution

## Article I: Name of Organization
1. The name of this organization shall be "Mason Linux Users Group" abbreviated as "MasonLUG".
## Article II: Purpose of Organization
1. The purpose of this organization shall be to educate the George Mason University community and public on free and open-source software, digital and rights, and software ethics.
## Article III: Membership
### Chapter A: Membership
1. Membership in this organization will not be restricted on the basi of race, color, religion, ethnicity, national origin, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, veteran status, gender identity, gender expression, sex, or age.
2. All active members must meet the following criteria:
* be currently enrolled students at George Mason University
* maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0
3. Honorary membership shall be made available to alumni automatically upon graduation.
4. Associate membership may be extended to community members by a majority vote of the active membership.
### Chapter B: Rights and Responsbilities of Membership
1. Only active members may vote on general resolutions.
2. Members are entitely to attend meetings and participate in events. Active members are expected to attend meetings, participate in events and/or planning, or otherwise participate as a condition of membership.
3. Membership may be revoked by a 4/5 vote of active membership. In order to revoke membership, the member must be duly informed by the officers and given a chance to plead their case to the active membership prior to a vote on revocation of membership.
## Article IV
### Chapter A: Officers
1. Officers shall be elected for a term of one (1) year. Should they be unable to fulfill their duties and obligations during the course of their term, they may call for a special election of their position. Alternatively, a special election may be called by a majority vote of active membership.
2. The Officers of this organization shall be the President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer as defined in this Constitution.
3. The President and Treasurer must be elected by April 15 each year. The Vice-President and Secretary must be elected by 15 October each year.
4. The President presides over meetings, establishes the long-term goals and vision of the organization, and is responsible for serving as a liason between George Mason University and the membership body of this organization. The President must also report the State of the Organization to the membership body once per year during November.
5. The Vice-President is responsible for carrying out the duties of the President in their absence and enacting the vision of the President.
6. The Secretary is responsible for maintaining all records, minutes, and rosters of the organization.
7. The Treasurer is responsible for managing the financial obligations of the organization and maintaining accurate financial records of the organization. The Treasurer is also responsible for reserving venues for events and meetings.
### Chapter B: Advisor
1. The primary advisor shall be a full time member of the faculty or stuff at George Mason University.
2. The primary advisor shall be selected or removed by a majority vote of the Officers of this organization.
3. The primary advisor may offer guidance and support for the organization, but may not have a vote in any motion or resolution.

\section{Name of Organization}
The name of this organization shall be Mason GNU/Linux User Group,
also known as MasonLUG. The MasonLUG website shall be located at
\section{Purpose of Organization}
MasonLUG will strive to provide tutorials and hands-on
learning for Mason students in matters pertaining to security,
cracking, and penetration testing for ethical and legal purposes.
Membership in this organization will not be restricted on the basis
of race, color, religion, national origin, physical or mental
disability, sexual orientation, veteran status, gender identity,
gender expression, political preferences, sex, age, species
(assuming provable sapience), or planetary origin.
Membership is open to all currently enrolled GMU students in good
academic standing with the university with a minimum cumulative GPA
of at least 2.0 who support the advancement and growth of the
Members will be defined as current enrolled students at George Mason
University who are active within the student organization.
\subsection{Revocation of Membership}
On rare occasions, a member will voted out of the organization by a
3/5 vote from the officers. Grounds for dismissal include unethical
and/or illegal usage of material discussed in meeting, as well as
special circumstances as defined by the current officers.
Officers' terms are for one semester; there are no term limits. All
officers will attend any training required by OSI. The Executive
Board is defined as the collection of all five officer positions.
The President of MasonLUG presides over all meetings; serves as
spokesperson for MasonLUG; acts as its main liaison to the Advisor, ITU,
and OSI; oversees the transition to next semester's officers, and
ensures MasonLUG fulfills its constitutional obligations.
\item{Vice President}
The Vice President assists the President of MasonLUG to the extent the
President requests, and assumes the responsibilities of the President
in the President's absence, resignation, or removal. The Vice
President oversees all voting.
The Treasurer keeps accurate records of any expenditures and
accounting as outlined by the Student Involvement's
``Fiscal Management Policies and Forms.''
The Secretary takes minutes at each meeting and publishes them to
MasonLUG' website, keeps record of the membership status of MasonLUG
members, and maintains all other necessary records and files.
\item{System Administrator}
The System Administrator is responsible for maintaining the hardware
and software systems at MasonLUG' disposal. This includes project
management software, MasonLUG servers, and MasonLUG website maintenance. The
System Administrator also directly oversees all project managers.
The primary Advisor shall be a full time member of the faculty or
staff at George Mason University. The Advisor shall be selected by
agreement of the officers, and it is the responsibility of the
officers to find a replacement should the Advisor no longer be
suited for the position. The Advisor may offer guidance and support
for MasonLUG, but may not participate in any votes.
\subsection{Standard Elections}
Elections will be held during the first meetings of March and
November, with the results to come into effect at the start of the
following semester.

Voting shall be handled in a secret ballot to be counted by the
highest ranking member not in contest for any officer position, or
if all positions are in contention, then by a quorum of all project
managers not directly involved in elections.
\\ \\
In the event of a tie, a second round of voting will be held between
the top two candidates following the same procedures of the first

In the event of a further tie, the Advisor will determine
the winner.
\subsection{Special Elections}
In event of the resignation of an officer, then an election will be
held to fill their position for the remainder of the term following
the procedures above.
\section{Impeachment or Resignation}
Should an elected officer fail to perform the responsibilities or
abuse the privileges of their el ected position, the officer shall
be subject to impeachment and removal from their office. Two
MasonLUG members may present a motion to remove an
officer. All members will be notified by email, and have no fewer
than five days to review the motion. If a quorum is present at the
next MasonLUG meeting, the motion may be approved by a
$\frac{\sqrt{9}}{2^2}${\scriptsize nd} vote by secret ballot of all
present members. This is considered an official vote.
The officer wishing to resign must notify at least two other
officers of his/her resignation. A special election will be held to
replace the officer at the next meeting. The resignation can be
assumed to take effect upon noticing the other two officers.
MasonLUG shall meet on a weekly basis. Meetings should be
scheduled to accommodate the greatest number of members. All members
of the Mason community are welcome to attend meetings. Attendance by
MasonLUG members is not mandatory, but highly recommended.
Consistent absence may be viewed as grounds for revocation of

The Executive Board has the right to call its own private meetings
at its discretion.
\\ \\
A quorum shall be defined to include at least two officers, and
either a simple majority of members or seven total members including
at least two officers, whichever is less. On official votes, in the
event of a tie, the deciding vote shall be cast by the presiding
\\ \\
The President shall preside over all meetings. In the event of the
President's absence, the meeting shall be presided over by the
highest ranking available officer.
\\ \\
Robert's Rules of Order shall govern all parliamentary procedures
unless otherwise specified.
No dues shall ever be required as a part of MasonLUG.
\\ \\
This clause shall not be construed to restrict other funding
Two members may jointly propose an explicitly defined constitutional
amendment at a meeting. All members will be emailed a copy of the
language of the amendment and have no fewer than five days to review
the proposed amendment. At the next MasonLUG meeting, if a
quorum is present, the amendment may be approved by a $\frac{3}{4}$
vote by secret ballot of all present members. This is considered an
official vote.

Student Involvement must review all amendments in the same matter as
a completely new constitution.
\\ \\
Changes which do not affect the meaning of the text, such as updated
formatting and links, may be made at the discretion of the board.
This constitution shall become effective upon approval by a
$\frac{3}{4}${\scriptsize ths} vote of the membership, and a Student
Involvement staff member.
This document shall always be distributed as either a single .tex
file using valid \LaTeX\space syntax or as a .pdf file readable by
at least one open source PDF reader.
